    harry 'dude' potter...
what with the half-blood prince set to come out in july, it is time we started some sort of a discussion about potter.
so, if harry potter was american fiction, what things would be different? (ok potter fans, my apologies for offending your sensibilities by ascribing anything non-british to harry potter...but just for a fun thought exercise, once in a while...!)

so, to just start you guys off..
hmm, there'd be no quidditch for one. it would be some form of foosball. use wands to move real things..trees maybe...

there would be a prof. Maya 'I can read your mind' Glennbrook, who would be the school counsellor. so, you know when harry and cho were having their relationship problems...(yuck! as though it wasn't bad enough..)

viktor krum would be a huge, burger eating jock..

    carry on...

    thoughts sans language?
so, do we need words in order to think? is there something more associated with thoughts than what can be expressed with language and words? I have often wondered if thinking involves aspects that are sometimes beyond the realm of words. Are there perceptions or images, for instance, that are associated with our thoughts that may not be perfectly conveyed with words? This idea is motivated by the instances, when I feel I lose or destroy some of the essence of a thought as I try conveying it in words.

I'd like to clarify here that I am not referring to problems arising out of weak articulation skills..I am speaking of the inadequacies of language itself. I realize there is some irony here...I resort to using words to convey the idea that there can be thoughts that do not involve the use of words.

I recognize that words are a medium of communication of our thoughts but are we also restricted in some senses, by the limitations of this medium? How are thoughts really formed? Do I develop ideas, opinions and concepts in abstract first and later translate the same into words? I am aware that while using words, I use English as the language, for the most part to formulate my thoughts. I guess my question is if there is a step before this? Is there something more associated with our thoughts that we may not always have words for in any language?
